Which is why she was stunned when, a few days later, Emma called her up and asked her to a Ramones concert.<br /><br />Emma had never been in a real serious relationship with a girl before, and Maggie wasn’t so sure she wanted to date someone who might just be “trying out the gay thing” – or “experimenting” as people like to say nowadays – and would end up just hurting her.  But when Emma called, Maggie says she was stunned into agreeing.  She always follows that up with: “That was my best mistake ever.” <br /><br />The concert ended at 1 AM, and the T shuts down at 12:30 AM, so instead of heading their separate ways for the rest of the night, Maggie and Emma decided to just walk around Boston until the sun rose.  This was, obviously, kind of ridiculous.  Romantic, but ridiculous.  At any rate, they made it until about four in the morning before they called it quits.  “We weren’t anywhere near desperate enough, nor liquored-up enough to keep going, not when we could actually go sit down somewhere not occupied by a hobo,” Emma likes to say.<br /><br />Before saying goodbye, despite the great time they had, Emma says she still had to cajole Maggie into agreeing to a second date.  Maggie still maintains she was right to be cautious, but in the end is glad she gave in, because their second date was even better than their first.  They went to a movie the following night, and, again, stayed out almost until the sun rose, and Maggie agreed to a third date this time with no begging from Emma.<br /><br />When they both headed back to San Francisco (on separate flights this time), they kept seeing more of each other, going to concerts, museums, tourist hotspots neither of them had ever managed to hit up despite living in the city a combined five years.  They started to get serious about each other and their relationship pretty quickly, and inside of six months they had moved in together and had adopted a puppy named Lando from a no-kill shelter. <br /><br />Over the next two years Emma ended up getting a job back in Boston, and Maggie decided to move with her, which really cemented their relationship.  By the time they hit year five of their relationship and they were 28 and 29 years old respectively, they decided they wanted to have kids, and so signed up with an adoption agency that specialized in gay and lesbian adoptions.  This is where my older sister Amalia comes in,  after a two-year wait.  And after they got Amalia they just kept going.  There are five of us now, and it’s been great having our family officially recognized as a family, even if we had to wait so long for it to happen. <br /><br />I’ve got countless friends with heterosexual parents who’ve married and divorced at least two partners in their lifetimes, and mine have stayed together longer than I’ve been alive without the benefit of official governmental recognition, family health insurance, or a time where they didn’t feel marginalized because of who they loved, which, in my mind, makes them all the stronger, and all the more admirable.

Later as I was busy with my works, I totally forgot about the call and thought that it may be some telemarketing call. In the late evening around 7:30 PM, I left the office and when I was driving I got a call again. Usually I won’t attend the calls when I drive. So, I couldn’t attend this call too. <br /><br />After a long drive, I reached home, refreshed myself and had dinner. When I entered into my room and took my mobile, I noticed that the call was from the same number. The time was almost 10PM. So I just sent a message saying “Hi, I was travelling so I couldn’t attend. She posed with a cute smile and carried a naive look in a photo hanged over the wall with a candle lit in front of her… <br /><br />I threw a puzzled look to her parents, they explained me everything as that happened… Yes, now only I remembered…As she said earlier, I met her in road only with face full of blood…. <br /><br />At that moment, I felt being carried away miles back, to the day one when I met her… I was able to see only the faded part of my memories but still I clearly saw her face covered with blood… Suddenly, my body jolted out of fear and I was already sweating here and there all over my body and I came running out of that room… Only then I remembered to take breath but still I was suffocating to death… When all the unanswered questions that was running through the thick and thin of my nerve starting killing me slowly, I decided to leave the place… <br /><br />That’s when I saw the two old faces that followed me with a puzzled look for a second and then the old lady went in back to her room again asking me to wait… The old man who was standing with me kept glaring at me blinking his eyes often but his glare seemed to carry thousands of meanings for it which I couldn’t interpret… After a couple of minutes, she came back with an envelope in hand and handed over to me… <br /><br />I got that cover with my shaky-hands and rushed back to my bike without turning back even once and without informing them that I’m leaving… I quickly kick-started and drove back to my house… On my way, her face kept coming back to me even while I didn’t make any effort to remember her… I literally ran to my room to avoid her, slammed the door and slid down behind the door… But her thoughts haunted me… <br /><br />I was on the way to my office via one of the calm roads of the city early in the morning and suddenly heard a loud noise… The truck which overtook me had hit the bike that was going in front of me and the girl who was riding that bike fell aside… Before I got down from my bike, she lost huge amount of blood… She was gasping for breath when I went near her and she slowly looked at me… Immediately, without wasting time I informed ambulance and gave her the first aid with the kit I was having… <br /><br />Later when the ambulance arrived, I went with her in the ambulance as she was holding my hands and I didn’t want let her hands go… On the way, I saw how desperate she was to live… At that moment, I understood what’s life… When there are people on earth who always complaint how complicated life is and even decide to throw it away, there are also people like her who knows the value of life, how pretty it is and wants to live it desperately… I admitted her, informed her parents with the number in her mobile and left the hospital… <br /><br />Tears started flowing down my cheeks and I was gasping for breath… Then I realized that I was still holding something in my hands… I slowly opened the letter that the old couple gave me and it read, <br /><br />“Thank you so much. It’s only because of you that I’m blessed to see and talk with my parents for one last time. I’ll never forget you even after my life and I wish you a wonderful life ahead. <br /><br />Life had changed for me. I never realized it. Moonlight walk changed into late night strategy workshops. Candlelight dinner turned into business meetings. Sweet and short phone calls from her transformed into long hour teleconferences. Gifts were no more priority now — there should be some tangible return whatever we invest, after all. Spending even 5 dollars on the bouquet for the Valentine’s Day seemed meaningless — you would lose at least half an hour searching for a parking space in the downtown. <br /><br />Overall there was no respite from the hectic office and the future planning. Whenever she, in a very mild attempt, tried to express her feelings, I had pre-defined answer, “these all are for us only, darling” and she used to be quiet for another month or so. <br /><br />Recently I had to go to Holland on a business trip for a week. I was working on an important assignment. I didn’t have even five minutes to talk to my parents who traveled more than fifteen hundred miles just to meet us. I called her to inform that I had to leave that evening. It was not new to her. It happened many times, and every time, in evening, I found her standing at the door, smiling, with my suitcase packed with all the necessary stuffs. <br /><br />I checked in to Crown Inn in Eindhoven. It was 3 PM. I wanted to rehearse my presentation before I meet the senior management. I was sure that she would have kept the file. In past, she never missed what I needed, never ever. But I could not control my anger. I opened my leather cased Samsonite and file was not there!!! I took out or rather threw cloths one by one on the cozy floor of Crown Inn. <br /><br />“Here it is” phewwww… what a relief.” I sighed. I knew she never missed even my minute taste and never ending petty demands. And for this important file, I had specifically reminded her. <br /><br />I opened the file. There was a pink envelop, something similar to what we used to exchange, long time ago, before our marriage. Those days, loves were not made on the Internet. It had been more than twelve years. <br /><br />I opened the envelope. It had our family photo, with her and our two little ones. We all were smiling. There was a pink greeting card with a red heart printed on it. Inside the card, it read, “Miss you my dear Teddy Bear.” <br /><br />When I was returning, at the Schiphol airport, after many years I purchased something for her… just for her… a pair of diamond earrings.
